Mary Avara" was appointed to the Maryland Motion Picture Censor Board in 1960. She obtained national notoriety for her outspoken opinions. She was a guest several times on Johnny Carson, Mike Douglas, Merv Griffin and many others. She was best known for her very public feud with filmmaker John Waters and her on air fights with Bobby Darin. The Censor Board was dissolved in 1981 but Mary continued her fight against pornography and her constant effort to feed the poor, care for the homeless and protect the rights of children until her death in 2000
